Stafford Forests Destroyed by Union soldiers

During the battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, the Wilderness and Spotsylvania Courthouse, many union
troops encomped in Stafford County. Aquia Church and Chatham were used as hospitals. To provide heat and to cook, the Union soldiers cut down almost every
tree in Stafford. It took years for the trees to regrow in the Stafford area after the Civil War was over.
