Sharecroppers Fight to Survive

Sharecropping was a popular practice in the South after the Civil War. Poor whites and freed African Americans were able to farm the land lent to them and pay rent to the wealthier landowners. Unfortunately, most of the sharecroppers remained very poor under this system.
