Right bsefore the surrender at Appomatix Court House Robert E. Lee urged the sothern soldiers to accept the loss of the war. This action stopped the soldiers from fighting back and forming "secret gangs" after the war already ended which helped the Union preserve itself. Robert E. Lee was offered command of the Union but he turned it down because he did not want to fight against his own state even though he did not feel slavery was right. We thank Robert E. Lee for all he has done for us.
