A nation divided
Election of 1860
Abraham Lincoln
|
The election of 1860 was the last straw for the pro-slavery states in the South. Many past Presidents and members of Congress had managed to compromise on the slavery issue for the last several years, but Abraham Lincoln was the leader of a new Republican Party. The Republican Party viewed slavery as an evil not to be extended into the West, but only to be tolerated. Southerners viewed this political party as anti-slavery, and they believed it would eventually want to destroy slavery. Abraham Lincoln, a Republican, was elected President of the United States in 1860.
