Some of the slaves in the South resisted slavery. Nat Turner was a slave in Virginia who led a revolt against plantation owners. It was a bloody revolt in which several men, women, and children were killed. After two days, Nat Turner was captured and hanged.
Frightened by the revolt, many Southern states passed stricter slave codes to protect themselves against uprisings. These new laws did not permit slaves to leave a plantation or meet in a group without a white present. It was also illegal to teach a black to read. After Nat Turner's rebellion, the situation worsened for slaves in the South.
