A nation divided
Uncle Tom's Cabin
Harriet Beecher Stowe
In 1852, Harriet Beecher Stowe published Uncle Tom's Cabin.
Stowe wanted her book to change the way of thinking about slavery. It did.
In her book, she depicted the cruelty of slave life on a plantation.
Uncle Tom's Cabin became an almost instant bestseller and was made into a play. Southerners claimed the book was full of lies and was not what really happened, but northerners were suddenly awakened to the horrors of slavery.
