Virginia faced social, political, and economic problems following the Civil War. The newly freed slaves had little food, clothing, shelter, and no way to make a living. The economy of Virginia, much like the rest of the south, had collapsed, and confederate money had no value. For this reason, banks were closed.
Because of the war, railroads, bridges, and crops had been destroyed, and Virginia no longer had a functioning government. Richmond had been the seat of the Confederacy for four years, but now it was destroyed, and Richmond was in ruins. Virginia had to go through a long period of Reconstruction, along with the rest of the South.
