Introduction
When the American Civil War began in April of 1860, no one could have predicted what would happen. Men marched off to war in their crisp uniforms and colorful flags, while the people at home believed it would be over in a few months. The Civil War lasted four years, and during that time, American strength was tested. Whether it was a soldier on the battlefield, or a relative at home, everyone was affected by this brutal war.
