Aftermath
African-Americans after the war
Colin Powell is this country's first African-American secretary of state.
|
The African families that had been captured and brought to America as slaves were now free. They were a group of people with new rights, opportunities, and freedoms. They could take part in whatever America had to offer. They were now truly African-Americans.
Many people tried to stop the African-Americans from becoming an integral part of American society, but they failed. African-Americans have enriched this country for the last one hundred and thirty years. They have made invaluable contributions to art, literature, medicine, politics, sports, and daily life just to name a few. African-Americans will continue to broaden and enrich the culture of this nation.
