Stafford Highlanders registration scheduled

The Stafford Highlanders will hold a registration for new and returning wrestlers, ages 6-15, at the Stafford Gymnastics and Recreation Center, Nov. 6 at 6 p.m. A parents meeting will follow at 6:30 p.m.

The cost is $75 for new wrestlers and $65 for returning wrestlers. Each new wrestler must have a Social Security number and two copies of his birth certificate. The first practice is Nov. 12.

Basketball registration deadline set for Nov. 11

Registration for the YMCA Winter Basketball League will be held Sept. 16-Nov. 11 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Boys and girls ages 7-17 are eligible to register for the league. The fee is $30 for YMCA members and $50 for nonmembers. For more information, call the YMCA at 371-9622, ext. 32.

Girls lacrosse meeting to be held Oct. 10

There will be a meeting at the Fredericksburg-Stafford Park Authority building on Butler Road, next to Brooks Park, Oct. 10, 7:30 p.m., for girls in grades 8-12 who are interested in playing lacrosse. Stafford hosts visitors from Stafford, England

The Stafford Virginia-Stafford England Friendship Association will host 31 adults from its sister city in Stafford, England, for two weeks.

This exchange will focus on educational and social activities. The visitors will be hosted by local families.

Stafford Board of Supervisors and Chairman Robert Gibbons will recognize the delegation, headed by the mayor of Stafford, England, Ralph Cooke, at the Riverside Center Dinner Theater on Oct. 10, 5:30 p.m.

JMC hosts women's leadership colloquium

Mary Washington College's James Monroe Center for Graduate and Professional Studies will host the Leadership Colloquium for Professional Women on Nov. 7, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The annual event is designed to help women develop skills in the core traits of leadership through workshops and networking with other women leaders and managers.

Registration is due by Oct. 31. The fee of $99 covers breakfast and lunch, all materials and sessions, and a reception.

This year's keynote address will be given by Virginia Secretary of Administration Sandra Dixon Bowen, who will speak from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m.

The LCPW program also will include four concurrent morning workshops: Managing Change, Running Effective Meetings, Positive Power Leadership and Creativity/Problem Solving. Participants may choose to attend any two of the four workshops.

In the afternoon, a panel discussion will focus on celebrating diversity.

A workshop, The Truth About Credit Card Debt, and a session, Anytime is the Right Time to Plan Your Retirement, also will be offered.

The ninth annual colloquium will conclude with a reception and presentation of the Patricia Lacey Metzger Distinguished Achievement Award.

The colloquium is jointly sponsored by Mary Washington College's James Monroe Center and the nonprofit Virginia Foundation for Women.

JMC is located on U.S. 17 in Stafford County near Fredericksburg three miles west of Interstate 95 exit 133.

Dominion Republican Women's Club meets

The Dominion Republican Women's Club's meeting will be held Oct. 15, 6:30 p.m., at the Paradise Diner in Stafford. The guest speaker will be Dr. Sylvia Kolough, who will speak on international education. Del. Mark Cole holds town-hall meetings

Del. Mark Cole will hold four town-hall meetings throughout the 88th District to discuss issues for the upcoming General Assembly session.

Meetings will be held as follows:

Oct. 28, 7-8:30 p.m., in Room A of the Salem Church Library in Spotsylvania.

Nov. 4, 7-8:30 p.m., at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Remington.

Nov. 7, 7-8:30 p.m., at Mount Ararat Baptist Church in North Stafford.

Nov. 9, 10:00 a.m.-noon, in southern Stafford at Cole's district office in the Colonial Circuits Building across from GEICO.

Cole, a Republican, represents the 88th District, which includes parts of Stafford, Spotsylvania and Fauquier counties.

Big Brothers Big Sisters holds orientation

Groups seek building supply donations

Rebuilding Together with Christmas in April will hold a Building Supply Yard Sale on Nov. 2, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Steve Spratt Improvements on Alum Spring Road in Fredericksburg.

Proceeds from the yard sale will benefit Rebuilding Together with Christmas in April and its repair and rehabilitation program for needy homeowners.

Building contractors and others in the community who want to donate building supplies for the yard sale should contact Spratt at 371-0512 to arrange for delivery or pickup. Volunteers with pickup trucks also are needed to help with the transport of donated building supplies.

Youth Outreach Services holds meeting for teens

Youth Outreach Services will host a meeting Oct. 19, 9 a.m. to noon, at Porter Library. The meeting is open to the public and is held to generate support and to gain teenager participation in the group's television program, "Teens Called to the Nations." Parents are encouraged to attend the meeting.

YOS is a nonprofit organization that provides "positive peer pressure" to teenagers. It encourages the positive aspects of life that help youth avoid harmful behaviors.

Schools plan art auction after-prom fund-raiser

An art auction will be held Nov. 16 at Augustine Golf Clubhouse. The preview will start at 6:30 p.m. The auction will start at 8 p.m.

Proceeds from the auction will be divided evenly between North Stafford High School and Colonial Forge High School After Prom Committees.

Professor to speak at historical society

The Stafford County Historical Society will hold its Oct. 17 meeting in the Board Chambers at the Stafford County Administration Center, 1300 Courthouse Road, 7:30 p.m.

The speaker will be Dr. James Bryant, assistant professor of history at Shenandoah University in Winchester. He will speak on "Stafford County as a Flagship of Freedom."

Bryant was born and raised in Hampton and has been a popular and knowledgeable speaker at many historical-group meetings. He has spoken on the role of black people in the history of this area, with emphasis on the Civil War period, and has made presentations about Moncure Daniel Conway, the military role of black people during the Civil War and many other subjects. In his presentation this month, he is expected to describe Stafford County's role in the Underground Railway.

Pregnancy Help Center holds fund-raiser

The Rappahannock Pregnancy Help Center will hold its third annual Fundraiser Banquet on Oct. 24, 7 p.m., at the Holiday Inn Select. A live 11-week preborn baby's ultrasound will be demonstrated, with special music by Jamie Owens Collins. The banquet is free, and reservations may be made by calling 370-1800.

Summit Presbyterian holds fall festival

Summit Presbyterian Church in North Stafford will hold a Fall Festival and Flea Market Oct. 19, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The sale will feature furniture, appliances, a vehicle, toys, clothes, antiques, books and other miscellaneous items. There also will be a moon walk, clowns, games and fresh apple butter. Hot dogs and kielbasa will be available. Proceeds will go to the church's building fund.

Richland Baptist holds Harvest Festival

Richland Baptist Church's Fellowship Committee will sponsor a Harvest Festival on Oct. 31, 7-9 p.m., at the church, 2482 Warrenton Road in Hartwood. Hay rides, pony rides, music, games, a petting zoo and food will be available. Participants should come dressed in Western attire.

MediCorp invites public to open-campus day

MediCorp Health Systems will hold open-campus day Oct. 12, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Mary Washington Hospital campus. There will be free health screenings and educational booths including: flu shots for adults 18 and older; blood-sugar screenings; blood-pressure checks; bone-density screenings; depression screenings; Ident-A-Kid Child ID Station; body-fat analysis; asthma screenings; and the Mary Washington Hospital Auxiliary Mobile Health Clinic.

Fair helps disabled prepare for adulthood

Pathways to the Future, a transition fair for students with special needs, their families and professionals will be held Oct. 19, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The fair, which will be held at Walker-Grant Middle School, will provide an opportunity to learn about resources available for students with special needs as they prepare for adult life. Registration and vendor fair begin at 8:15 a.m. Admission and lunch are free.

The North Stafford Athletic Booster Club will hold its annual craft fair Nov. 9 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. A $1 donation will be collected at the door. All proceeds from this event will be used for scholarships awarded to eligible seniors.

Aquia Evening Lions host Swingtime Dance

The Aquia Evening Lions Club will host a Swingtime Dance, featuring the music of the Fredericksburg Big Band, at the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, 21 Cool Springs Road, Saturday, Oct. 19, 8 p.m.-midnight.

Volksmarch scheduled for Oct. 19-20

The Germanna Volkssport Association's 28th International Volksmarch will be held Oct. 19 and 20 in Ashland.

The 10-k, 6.2-mile, Volksmarch, or "walk of the people," is a fun, noncompetitive, family-oriented walk along marked trails. Participants will travel the path of history along the 19th-century railroad line through the charming town of Ashland and the campus of Randolph-Macon College at their own pace. They may walk, jog or run in the event.

Participants may sign in be-tween 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. and finish by 5 p.m. at the Hanover Arts & Activities Center, 500 South Center St. in Ashland.

Association credits and mementos will be available for purchase. There will be refreshments on site.

The event is sponsored by the Germanna Volkssport Association, the Hanover Arts & Activities Center and Ashland/Hanover Convention & Visitors Bureau.
