Change of venue doesn't slow Stafford's runaway ground game

Brooke Point could do little to stop Stafford's oppressive running game last night in the teams' Commonwealth District opener. The Indians won it, 24-6.

The game was held on the high school field at the Quantico Marine Corps Base. Stafford County officials did not permit outdoor games on its athletic fields in light of the recent sniper shootings in our area.

The foreign field did not keep Stafford from business as usual.

"They executed their offense very well," Brooke Point coach Jeff Berry said of Stafford. "They play smart, smash-mouth football."

The rushing tandem of Thomas McClelland and Tim Sullivan used Stafford's strong offensive line to propel them to over 100 yards each. They both were past the century mark just nine minutes into the second half, and McClelland scored three touchdowns in his team-high 174-yard performance.

"No team's found a way to stop our running game yet," McClelland said.

McClelland now has 13 touchdowns after six games and averages 165 yards per contest. A close season-opening loss to Colonial Forge, 20-14, has been the Indians' only setback. Stafford has won five straight to improve its record to 5-1.

The Indians' lines were strong on both sides.

"We got a pretty good complete effort from both sides," Stafford coach Roger Pierce said.

Stafford limited Brooke Point (2-4) to just 49 yards of total offense in the first half. The Black-Hawks managed just 129 yards rushing for the game, which included a 20-yard gain with less than two minutes remaining.

It was a disappointing follow-up to Brooke Point's 330-yard rushing effort the previous week in an upset of Massaponax.

Stafford mounted 328 yards last night, bringing its average up to 283 yards rushing per game.

The Indians scored once in each quarter, beginning with a 26-yard field goal by Ray Damm, who also made all three of his extra-point attempts.

McClelland then strong-armed a 4-yard run up the middle in the second quarter to score the first touchdown.

Sullivan set up the first TD by covering 64 yards on six carries.

McClelland had a workout on his last two scoring runs of 20 and 55 yards.

Contingent on plans related to the shootings, Stafford is scheduled to play host to Albemarle on Friday and Brooke Point will welcome Culpeper in district action.
