Date published: 10/1/2002 (Richmond-AP) -- The American Civil Liberties Union wants King George County to start protecting its residents from identity theft. The ACLU of Virginia sent a letter to King George's court clerk today, urging him to remove people's Social Security numbers from county records posted online. ACLU Executive Director Kent Willis says this is the most basic form of protecting citizens' privacy rights. The Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals ordered the Virginia State Board of Elections to remove Social Security numbers from voter registration rolls in 1993. Several years later, the state Department of Motor Vehicles also started omitting the identification numbers from people's permit licenses.
