Date published: 10/2/2002 (Fairfax-AP) -- Mosquitoes have tested positive for malaria in Fairfax County. The county health director says mosquitoes captured last night in a trap in Herndon have come back with a positive result. More mosquitoes will be trapped and tested, in order to verify the results. The development comes barely a week after malaria-infected mosquitoes were found in two areas of Loudoun County. Fairfax Health Director Doctor Carol Sharrett says that's what prompted her department to set the traps. She calls the development evidence of a regional problem. Sharrett says a Fairfax County resident was recently diagnosed with malaria, but there's no evidence she got it from these mosquitoes. Sharrett says it's more likely that the woman got malaria while traveling overseas.
