UVA cuts spending early

Date published: 10/3/2002

(Charlottesville-AP) -- The University of Virginia says it will begin to cut spending by 15 percent in advance of the governor's announcement of statewide budget cuts later this month.

U-V-A President John Casteen the Third says he'll ask the university's board of visitors tomorrow to approve a midyear tuition increase of up to 200 dollars.

Officials at some other Virginia public universities said they haven't ruled out a midyear tuition increase as a last resort.

Casteen says the university will continue its hiring freeze but won't have any layoffs, furloughs or forced early retirements with the latest cut.

Governor Mark Warner is expected to announce state spending cuts that could range from seven-to-15-percent to close a budget shortfall of nearly two billion ollars.
