VRE holds hearing on station’s ticket prices
Ticket prices at the Brooke station were reduced four years ago

The Virginia Railway Express will hold a public hearing Wednesday to discuss raising ticket prices at the Brooke train station in Stafford County.

In 1998, VRE lowered ticket prices there to encourage more people to use the station. The station, like the one at Leeland Road, is in VRE’s Zone 8, but riders paid the lower Zone 6 price.

That saved riders about 12 percent on tickets. For a passenger purchasing a monthly ticket, the savings was $23.90 a month, or $286.80 a year.

In August, nearly 300 people got on and off trains at Brooke every day, so VRE no longer needs to encourage more passengers to use that station, said spokesman Mark Roeber.

And by getting rid of that discount, VRE can bring in another $150,000 a year to help serve a growing ridership, he said.

The hearing will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the first-floor conference room of the Stafford County Administrative Building at Courthouse Road and U.S. 1.
