Date published: 10/7/2002 (Arlington-AP) -- US Airways says it will cut 642 jobs this fall, in addition to the 1,400 layoffs it's already announced. The layoffs come as the bankrupt airline tries to reduce its flight schedule by 13 percent. The cuts will be confined to the fleet and customer service sectors. US Airways spokeswoman Tammy Lee called the furloughs a reality, and said they have been part of the airline's restructuring plans since the beginning. The largest cuts will be felt in the airline's hubs in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Charlotte. US Airways is the nation's seventh-largest carrier, but it was forced to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in August. The company reduced its capacity by 23 percent following the terrorist attacks last September 11th, and had warned employees and customers that further reductions were likely.
