MANASSAS, Va. (AP) _ A man was fatally shot while pumping gas Wednesday night, and police were investigating whether the slaying was linked to a series of sniper deaths in the Maryland area.
Police gave no additional information about the shooting, which occurred at about 8:15 p.m. at the intersection of Sudley and Balls Ford roads. Prince William County spokeswoman Sgt. Kim Chinn said police were interviewing possible witnesses. “We are still very preliminarily beginning this investigation,” Chinn said. “We have been in contact with the officials from Maryland and the task force there ... so we are sharing any information that we have.” Manassas is approximately 30 miles due west of Washington, D.C. Chinn said she had few details to release late Wednesday night. She declined to say where the shots came from, how many were fired, or where the victim was hit. Police did not immediately know if the shooting was linked to the series of shootings in the Washington suburbs. Police had blocked off several streets around the gas station, and they were interviewing a few people at the scene. Earlier Wednesday, a window on a food delivery truck shattered while the driver was traveling on the Route 234 bypass in Prince William County, several miles from the shooting at the gas station. Chinn said police were still investigating that incident, but said it appeared the van had been struck by a birdshot from a shotgun. The driver was not injured. Chinn said police searched a wooded area near the highway, but did not turn up anything. “We don’t know for certain what the projectile was,” Chinn said. She said it was too early to tell if the two incidents were related. Chinn asked anybody traveling in the Manassas area after 8 p.m. Wednesday night to call Crimesolvers at 1–800–673–2777.
