Yet another Fredericksburg-area restaurant bites the dust as That’s Amore closes. Date published: 10/17/2002

Another Fredericksburg-area restaurant has shut down, as That’s Amore recently closed. The Uptown Central Park Italian eatery, which opened in March and employed about 90 people, suddenly closed Oct. 6. “It was a business decision that the company made,” explained Rob Grimes, president of That’s Amore, during a phone interview from his Rockville, Md., corporate offices. “We weren’t hitting the kind of numbers we wanted to there.” He said the Fredericksburg area just wasn’t ready for such high-quality cuisine. All of the other That’s Amore locations in Maryland and Northern Virginia are doing fine and will not close, he said. “It seemed like the community was really not ready to support our level of restaurant,” he said. “We are not an Olive Garden, we’re a higher level than that, and I think we were operating in a community that just wants Olive Garden.” In the Fredericksburg area, however, many upscale and higher-priced restaurants have thrived for years, such as Claiborne’s and Le Petite Auberge. That’s Amore’s dinners range in price from about $11 for a pasta dish to about $20 for steak. The eatery also offers family-size meals. Grimes would not comment on when the restaurant’s staff was told about the closure. The closing is the latest in a string of recent sudden restaurant closures, such as Tumbleweed Southwest Grill in Spotsylvania County, Guido’s Pizza in downtown Fredericksburg, and the restaurants affiliated with the Shark Club, including the Pacific Grille and Safari Steakhouse, an upscale restaurant serving mammoth-size steaks and seafood dishes. Many employees were surprised to be without work.
