Stafford County sheriff's deputies are searching for man who led them on a wild chase after being stopped on suspicion of selling stolen goods. Date published: 10/19/2002
Stafford County sheriff’s deputies are searching for a man who led them on a wild chase this morning.
Deputies first encountered the man about 3:30 a.m. on the Fredericksburg side of the Falmouth Bridge after they got a report that he might be selling stolen goods out of the back of his vehicle, Sheriff Charlie Jett said. A deputy confronted the man, ran a check on his name and learned that he was wanted in Maryland on weapons charges. As the deputy headed back toward the man’s vehicle, the man drove off, Jett said. Deputies pursued him through the city, back up U.S. 1 and toward North Stafford, Jett said. They even managed to flatten his tires with “stinger” strips. But the man continued onto Interstate 95—going the wrong way. Deputies called off the pursuit at that point, but they monitored nearby highway exits, Jett said. The man eventually exited I–95 onto State Route 610, where he ditched his car at a gas station and fled on foot, Jett said. Despite a ground and air search, the man remains at large tonight. The 37-year-old man is described as white with a shaved head. He was last seen wearing a white T–shirt and dark pants. Deputies are assuming he is armed and dangerous, Jett said. Anyone with information is asked to call 911.
