Luke Martenson booted a 22-yard field goal with less than five minutes left in the third quarter last night, lifting the James Wood High School football team to a 3-2 Northwestern District victory over Liberty last night near Winchester. Colonels linebacker Michael Witherspoon preserved the victory with an interception at the Colonels' 23-yard line in the final minute of play. The victory boosted James Wood's record to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in district play. Liberty dropped to 4-3 and 1-1. Following a scoreless first half, the Eagles got on the scoreboard after James Wood punter Jim Kimble booted the ball out of the end zone following a poor snap from center. Both teams had one running back who rushed for more than 100 yards. The Colonels' Ethan Nielsonrod finished with 100 yards on 19 carries; the Eagles' Doug Heath totaled 105 yards on 13 attempts. The Eagles were fresh off a 34-7 victory over Warren County on Tuesday night. The Colonels, who didn't win a district contest last year, were coming off a 35-22 loss to Fauquier on Monday night. Next Saturday, Liberty travels back to Winchester to face district-leading Handley. Kickoff is at 1:30. King George 14, Caroline 7The King George football team scored its first touchdown on an interception return and a second pick off later led to the game-winning score, as the Foxes posted their first victory of the season in yesterday's Battlefield District victory over Caroline. A second-quarter interception return by Stevie Monroe accounted for the lone score by the host Cavaliers, whose offense never got untracked and suffered six turnovers. King George improved to 1-6 overall and 1-1 in district play. Caroline dropped to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in district action. Next Friday, King George is scheduled to be at home against Courtland and Caroline is slated to play host to Massaponax.
