Officials: Louisiana killing linked to area sniper attacks

Date published: 10/31/2002

(Baton Rouge, Louisiana-AP) -- Authorities in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, say a bullet recovered from the scene of a September 23rd killing came from the rifle used in the Washington-area sniper killings.

Police say the victim, a beauty supply worker, was shot once in the head during a robbery. Witnesses described the gunman as a young black man who fled into a park.

Earlier, law enforcement sources said federal investigators had linked the same Bushmaster 223-caliber rifle used in the DC-area shootings to one in Baton Rouge.

Baton Rouge Police Chief Pat Englade says first-degree murder warrants have been issued for 41-year-old John Allen Muhammad and 17-year-old John Lee Malvo. They face multiple state and federal charges for the shooting in Alabama and the series of sniper shootings in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia that left ten dead and 13 wounded.
