Dogwood Development project would boost U.S. history
Dogwood Development project would boost U.S. history

As a citizen who believes in the importance of historic preservation, I urge support for the Dogwood Development project in Spotsylvania County. I understand the concerns of other preservationists who believe that this project will harm a historic area. But I believe that these people have not considered all of the positive factors in the scenario.
At present, Chancellorsville is host to a battlefield that is one of the most important in U.S. history. But there is little reason to visit the area other than to see the location of Gen. Robert E. Lee's crucial victory. For the most serious students of history, and I am one of them, this hallowed ground is enough to make the trip.
But not all Virginians have the same dedication to learning about the past. They would be far more likely to visit this sacred site if there was positive development in the area. A thriving community with homes and small businesses will be an attractive place for many visitors.
Also, even serious students of history will see our enjoyment of this historic place greatly enhanced by positive development. I have visited numerous historic sites in our country and can say that lodging and theme-oriented small businesses that are close to the historic section greatly improve the experience.
Economic development and job creation have been proposed as solid grounds for supporting development. But let us remember that the Dogwood project will also do a great deal to bring people closer to history. Supporting this project is one way that you can promote knowledge of history in our commonwealth.
