MWC women are fourth as a team

Sophomore Erin Connelly finished second overall, helping the Mary Washington College women's cross country team to a fourth-place finish out of 27 teams yesterday in the South/Southeast Regional meet held at Pratt Park in Fredericksburg.

Connelly finished the course in a time of 22 minutes, 2.02 seconds and advanced to compete in the national championships in Northfield, Minn., next weekend. Connelly was just nine seconds off the winning pace, set by Emory's Angela Davie.

With her finish, Connelly also earned all-region honors, as did teammates Whitney Gray (19th, 23:29) and Macy Zwanzig (25th, 23:51). Gray, a freshman, is a former Culpeper High School standout.

The MWC women's team finished with a total of 117 points. The Eagles trailed only Emory University (58), Rhodes College (79) and Trinity University (106).

The MWC men's team finished eighth in the 23-team field. The Eagles were paced by former Caroline High School star Nate Brooks, who finished the 8-kilometer race 27th with a time of 26:47.

Emory also won the men's meet with 37 points. Lynchburg was second with 87. MWC finished with 198.

Field hockey

Mary Washington advanced to the round of eight with a 2-0 victory over Roanoke yesterday in the NCAA Division III tournament.

Goalie Robyn Lankford made four saves to register her eighth shutout of the season for the Eagles (15-4).

MWC got on the scoreboard once in each half, getting goals from Brynn Maguire and Adrienne Trombley. Former Courtland High School standout Chrissy Soper was credited with an assist on Trombley's goal.

Mary Washington tangles with unbeaten and top-ranked Rowan today at 1 p.m. with the regional crown on the line. The game will be played in Glassboro, N.J.

Roanoke finished the season with a 14-6 record.

Swimming

The Mary Washington swim teams swept a pair of Capital Athletic Conference dual meets yesterday, as the men and women both defeated St. Mary's and Goucher.

The men's team pulled off a 69-25 win over Goucher and a 67-24 win over St. Mary's. Justin Snyder was a double-winner (200 IM, 100 free) in both meets.

The women's team won 58-36 over St. Mary's and 59-35 over Goucher. Lindsay McPherson (200 free, 200 back) and Kathryn Anderson (1,000 free, 500 free) were double-winners against St. Mary's. Anderson was a double-winner against Goucher.
