Going to game? Try another route

Date published: 11/23/2002

The rural stretch of U.S. 29 past Brightwood in Madison County is not typically known for traffic jams. But it has looked more like the Beltway than a byway since Monday's gasoline spill.

Virginia Department of Transportation crews should finish replacing a 30- by 125-foot section of the southbound lanes this weekend. Those lanes have been closed all week and traffic rerouted to one lane each way on the northbound side.

"We're making headway," VDOT spokesman Jim Jennings said yesterday.

About 13,000 vehicles a day use the highway. There will be more traffic than usual today because of fans driving to the Virginia-Maryland football game in Charlottesville.

Highway officials suggest an alternate route: Interstate 95 to State Route 3 to State Route 20 to Charlottesville.
