Belmont, Gari Melchers Estate and Memorial Gallery, 224 Washington St. in Falmouth. The 18th-century home and studio of American artist Gari Melchers is furnished with items collected from his residences and travels abroad. Also gardens, pastures and walking paths. Open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sundays, 1-5 p.m. Adults $6, ages 6 to 18 $1, under age 6 free. 654-1015.

Chancellorsville battlefield, State Route 3 west. Confederate Lt. Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson was wounded here. The first walking tour begins at 11:20 a.m. Visitors center is open daily, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission: $4 for ages 17 and older.

Chatham Manor, 120 Chatham Lane, off White Oak Road, Stafford County. An 18th-century estate that served as Union headquarters during the Battle of Fredericksburg. Historic building open daily, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission: $4 for ages 17 and older. 371-0802.

Civil War Life Museum, 4712 Southpoint Parkway, next to Spotsylvania County Visitor Center at Massaponax. Firearms and artifacts in original condition and life-size dioramas. Open daily, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sunday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Adults $4, ages 7-16 $2. 540/834-1859.

Ferry Farm, State Route 3 east in southern Stafford County. Self-guided walking tours of the site of George Washington's boyhood home. Open Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Adults $3, children 6-17, $1.50. 370-0732.

Fredericksburg Area Museum, 907 Princess Anne St. in Fredericksburg. Features a Civil War collection, photographs, paintings, furniture, toys, clothing and pottery. Adults $5, students $1, children under age 6, free. 371-3037.

George Washington Birthplace National Monument, Popes Creek, off State Routes 3 and 204 in Westmoreland County. Manor house and gardens. Open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily. Admission: $3 for ages 17 and older. 804/224-1732.
