city schools Hugh Mercer ElementaryThis week marks the beginning of the SOL practice sessions in all third-grade classrooms. Binders of SOL-related information were issued to the students and will begin to be incorporated into daily instruction and homework. Interested parents can obtain the released test items by logging onto the school's Web site. The school is coordinating with the Family Life Center in the Bragg Hill community. Interested parents are welcome to contact the center or Hugh Mercer for details on providing additional tutoring and homework assistance. Other community centers providing assistance are the Hazel Hill Community Center, the Dorothy Hart Community Center and the Fredericksburg Area Boys and Girls Club. The Hugh Mercer School Committee will meet from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the library tonight. --Michele Phillips Walker-Grant MiddleThe SCA Variety Show is today. Students in grades four and five will view the show from 8:15 to 9:30 a.m., and those in grades six and seven will partake from 12:45 to 2 p.m. The show will take place in the cafetorium. The School Committee will meet tonight at 7 in room 101. The Book Fair in the library runs through Friday. There will be a Valentine's Day Dance for students in grades six and seven from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Friday. The honor-roll assemblies for the second nine weeks will be held on Feb. 12 at the following times: Fourth grade, 9:45 a.m. Fifth grade, 8 a.m. Sixth grade, 1:45 p.m. Seventh grade, 9 a.m. Parent Conferences will be held on Feb. 12 from 6 to 8 p.m., by appointment only. --Valerie L. Battlefield ElementaryThe following students earned all A's for the second six weeks: Tigre Fortune, Oriana Muasau, Kailee Cross, Bianca Moeller, Kyle Eackles, Briana Boitano, Laura Helwig, Ashleigh Ranagan, Jennisha Washington, Ryan Snellings, Ada Yang and Siarra Bouches. The following students have been named Diligent Worker for the second six weeks: Kindergarten: Kayla Stephens, Alexander Gray, Alize Catlett, Jordan Wright First Grade: Angelica Henderson, Staci Reilly, Kevin Barr, Colin Kreiling and McKynzie Bouches.
