Israel-Palestine, not Iraq, is the place to abort global terror

Israel-Palestine, not Iraq, is the place to abort global terror

Date published: 3/20/2003

Not long ago a caller on C-Span's morning show referred to the Israel-Palestine conflict as the elephant in the living room that everyone pretends is not there. In other words, the Israel-Palestine conflict is the very large and primary problem of the Mediterranean world, yet the United States pretends not to notice.

While the United States views the Near East and Islam through the prism of Sept. 11, the Near East and Islamic world view the United States through the prism of the Israel-Palestine conflict. In my opinion, a just and lasting solution to the Israel-Palestine problem would be the most helpful way of dealing with international terrorism.

Whatever happens in Afghanistan, Iraq, and the Philippines, whatever military and diplomatic moves are made in those places, will not alter the root problem of which terrorism is the symptom.

The particulars of such a solution are beyond my competence, but it is obvious to me (and to many others) that the source of terrorism and the place to begin dealing with it are to be found in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
