The cause of freedom is being well-served in Iraq Date published: 3/28/2003
I offer these answers to David C. Roberts ["Support our troops, yes, but know that Bush is wrong," March 26]: 1. What weapons are being sent to Saddam's south? All sorts of weapons. 2. How do we know they are being sent south? Because we have smart people there who know what they are doing. 3. Aren't these the weapons U.N. inspectors were trying to find? Some of them. 4. Has our nation lied to us and the U.N.? Not lately. 5. How can our troops defend themselves? Our troops have been defending themselves, are you blind and deaf? 6. Will Saddam keep his troops in uniform? No. 7. Who said Saddam may have nukes? No one. 8. Why did we send our troops in so soon? Because our military leaders, who have experience in this sort of thing, said "go." 9. Are our troops being led into a false sense of security? I'm not sure what journalist you've been watching, but our troops know that they are anything but secure. I am an American soldier. I swore to defend my country against all enemies, foreign and domestic. Roberts has the right to disagree with the things that I am ordered to do, but remember that he has that right because of people like me. Let me remind him that terrorism is a threat not only to us, but also to many other innocent people in the world. What type of country would we be if we didn't defend the human rights and freedoms of others? We live in a country where people are secure in their daily lives, and don't give a second thought about terrorism. A bunch of people in New York, at the Pentagon and in a plane over Pennsylvania thought the same thing. We now know that it can happen to anyone at any time. As a soldier, I can only speak for myself when I say that my life is an easy expense to pay in order to ensure that my family and friends can live in peace. I strongly believe in what we are doing and wish everyone could see the integrity, honor, and privilege that servicemen and women feel because we know that we are a part of something so meaningful to the safety of our loved ones. No matter what situation I am in, I am proud of my country and its flag. I will try to make the people of this nation proud of the service I represent, for I am an American soldier.
