Media member investigated for taking art from Iraq

Date published: 4/23/2003

(Alexandria-AP) -- US authorities say several media members and US servicemen have been caught trying to ship Iraqi paintings, weapons and other war souvenirs to America.

The government is only identifying one person charged -- Benjamin James Johnson, who worked as an engineer for Fox News Channel.

The 27-year-old Alexandria resident was with US troops in Baghdad. He has not been arrested but is scheduled to appear before a federal magistrate Tuesday.

A complaint filed in an Alexandria court says Johnson tried to bring 12 paintings into the United States last week. Customs agents at Dulles International Airport found them in a cardboard box.

An affidavit filed with the complaint says Johnson gathered up the paintings at a palace that belonged to one of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's sons. The paintings depict Saddam and the son.
