US Central Command confirms Tariq Aziz in US custody

Date published: 4/24/2003

(Pentagon-AP) -- US Central Command confirms that Tariq Aziz is in American custody. A statement from the US military has very few details -- other than the confirmation that the man in custody is Aziz.

He's one of the best-known Iraqi officials and came to symbolize the Saddam Hussein regime. Aziz was Iraq's main spokesman and was always visible in public appearances and diplomatic discussions.

He was well-known for his assurances that Iraq did not possess chemical or biological weapons.

Earlier, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld had said in an AP interview that many Iraqi leaders now are turning themselves in to authorities. Rumsfeld says these people want "some credit" for surrendering.
