U-S troops say attackers triggered ammo dump blasts

Date published: 4/26/2003

(Baghdad, Iraq-AP) -- U-S soldiers blame today's deadly explosions in Baghdad on attackers who fired flares at an American ammunition dump.

At least nine people have been killed -- including three babies. One resident says "many houses" are destroyed.

Troops say angry residents fired on them as they tried to recover bodies from the scene. Other Iraqis threw rocks or spat on soldiers.

The ammunition was stored in a large field surrounded by high walls in the neighborhood in southeast Baghdad. It was part of huge hauls of munitions that U-S forces have been gathering from around the capital.

There have been controlled explosions at the same ammunitions dump in recent days.
