In a recent editorial, the writer lauded President Bush's "decision to land on an aircraft carrier at sea--a presidential first" ["Aboard the Lincoln," May 5]. Unfortunately, the writer missed the fact that this was as staged a media event as has ever been seen in U.S. history.
According to The Associated Press, the USS Abraham Lincoln was positioned farther offshore to guarantee that the backdrop to this self-congratulatory back-patting was open sea and not the Port of San Diego.
The crew must have been elated to have their homecoming and reunion with the loved ones they have not seen for months delayed even longer for this made-for-TV moment.
Donning a flight suit further demonstrates the disdain for those who serve our country proudly by a man who cannot account for a full 17 months of his purported military service in a National Guard unit, alleged to be a refuge for the offspring of the elite.
How much of this posturing are we veterans of actual military service expected to endure?
