Meadows a heritage 'hero' worthy of emulation Date published: 5/24/2003
It was gratifying to see the attitude and meaning in Mr. Bill Meadows, of Meadows Farm and Nurseries, in selling the historic Payne's Farm--land valued at more than $2 million--of 685 acres in Orange County to the Preservation Coalition for $1.2 million. The idea behind the sale was to preserve our history. How different from the thinking of the developers and the owners of the Mullins tract (site of the Chancellorsville Battlefield), who only think of the Yankee dollar. Mr. Mullins is asking for seven times the assessed value of the tract. Oh, but Mr. Mullins is willing to donate land from the tract as a battlefield park, perhaps 34 acres. The core battlefield encompasses over 300 acres. The coalition to preserve the battlefield is willing to pay the fair market value for the property as determined by a mutually acceptable appraiser. No one wants to deny Mr. Mullins' right to develop his property. It is about preserving the wonderful historic treasures that belong to Spotsylvania County and the American people. Mr. Mullins has a chance to enjoy a good return on his land, while helping to ensure our country's history is protected. Mr. Mullins has an opportunity to take on a leadership role and become a hero of Spotsylvania County, as Mr. Meadows has become a hero of Orange County and America. It was so wonderful to listen to Mr. Meadows concerning the Payne Farm tract. It restored my faith that there are still people who care for history more than the dollar. Our history is so important and is slipping away so quickly. I hope Mr. Mullins will become a hero. George P. Bond Sr. Spotsylvania
