Take your what to work?

Pet Sitters International wants folks to lug more than briefcases and bagged lunches to the office this week.

The world's largest organization for professional pet sitters presents its fifth annual Take Your Dog to Work Day.

PSI encourages dog owners to bring their four-legged friends to work with them this Friday, to see where they go and what they do all day.

Dogs might not master the company's filing system or help weed through the daily flurry of e-mails.

But the folks at PSI hope the pooches will have employers everywhere considering the positive impact of pets in the workplace. They're betting that non-pet owners, who melt at the floppy ears and soft fur, will rush out to adopt dogs of their own.

Five to nine million dogs and cats are euthanized each year, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

"Take Your Dog to Work Day will call attention to the wonderful pets that dogs make and will encourage adoption of them from rescue clubs, humane organizations and animal shelters," according to a PSI press release.

The company, based in King, N.C., created Take Your Dog to Work Day in 1999 to give back to the community of animals that they make their living from. They chose to honor dogs with the special day because of the canine's social nature and ease of travel.

Employers interested in participating in the event can order a TYDTWDay Action Pack from the PSI Web site at petsit.com. The kit comes with ways to spread the word throughout the company and tips to make the day a success.

"We chose to participate because most of the office staff have dogs and wanted a fun, bonding time with them at the office," said Jami Pease of Chesterfield Community Creations near Richmond.

It's difficult to know exactly how many folks participate each year in Take Your Dog to Work Day, said PSI public relations manager Ellen Price. But the event is increasing in popularity.

"We do know thousands of businesses from coast to coast and from border to border who just can't wait for this day to come around every year."
