Railroads also deserve public support

I agreed wholeheartedly with George Will's statement in his recent column: "Amtrak--long-distance trains, legislative logrolling, and all--should be counted as a cost of democracy. It is here to stay, like true love, only more so," [Cash-strapped and rundown, Amtrak needs to find right track," June 12].

One of the things that has been a detriment to our country is the fact that we have not kept our rails in good shape. If we had, we would not have had to build so many highways at their huge cost.

I like the ad that says a train can carry 500 trucks. To my way of thinking that is a great service to the whole country. I realize we need lots of trucks for areas without rail service, but just getting many trucks off the road is a big help.

As you can see, I believe in railroads.
