Governor meets with tax reform panel
RICHMOND--Virginia should consider taxing services and Internet sales as part of the effort to rework the state tax system, Gov. Mark Warner told a 10-member legislative tax reform commission today. Lawmakers should also evaluate the state's relationship with local governments and compel corporations to fulfill their tax responsibilities to the state, Warner said. The gathering in the Governor's Mansion was an effort to tamp down partisan rhetoric and set some guidelines for the tax reform effort. Comparing the current tax system to a "patchwork quilt," Warner outlined the broad principles he wants reform to follow, saying that restructuring should make the state's tax system more fair, more simple and more modern. "My hope is we can find some common ground with these principles," Warner said. "If we do our job, tax reform holds the promise of more fairness" which could boost the economy and therefore increase revenue.
