(Los Angeles-AP) -- Long-time O.J. Simpson friend Robert Kardashian, a key figure in the story of the ex-football star's murder trial, has died in California.
Kardashian, a lawyer who was part of Simpson's criminal defense team, eventually came to doubt his friend's innocence. He said the blood evidence was particularly troubling.
Kardashian died at his suburban Los Angeles home last night, eight weeks after being diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus. He was 59.
Kardashian opened his home to Simpson in the days after the athlete's ex-wife and her friend were murdered in 1994. The chase involving a white Ford Bronco began after Simpson slipped out of Kardashian's home. Simpson had said he'd surrender there.
Kardashian helped provide significant information revealed in Lawrence Schiller's book, "American Tragedy: The Uncensored Story of the Simpson Defense."
