Web comic 'Wigu' is solid gold

Date published: 10/16/2003

"It's pure gold, fused with diamond-filled platinum, and some adamantium thrown in for good measure. It is the most coveted material in the world."

What might this be? I'll tell you what this might be! This might be Wigu.

This is Wigu!

What's a Wigu, you ask? Perhaps a better question would be "Who is Wigu?"

Wigu is an imaginative young boy, who lives with sister Paisley, father Quincy and mom Romy. These people make up the Tinkle family.

The Tinkle family is not real. Do not try to look up their phone number.

The Tinkle family has their life story told to the world in a Web comic (a strip published on the inter-web) entitled "Wigu." And yes, Wigu is the main character.

Wigu likes to play video games and watch his favorite television show, "Magical Adventures in Space."

Wigu's sister is a stereotypical unrelentingly brooding goth who thinks there's nothing but evil in this world.

Wigu's mom is a shallow, materialistic nine-to-fiver, and his dad composes music and is proud of everything.

Every day that takes place in this comic is considered a chapter in this series, from the point when Wigu wakes up in the morning till he goes to bed. So far, there are four amazing chapters to read through. The stories range from writing a musical about cockfights, to battling a Space Mummy (Spummy) and waking up from the conflict with the whole family having amnesia.

It's all quite entertaining, at wigu.com.

Fans of other Web comics, such as "Elftor," will enjoy this. Unlike "Elftor," however, "Wigu" will not rot your soul to an emotionless cesspool.

"Wigu" is safe for the whole family.

While it may sound like a strange name for a young boy, the name Wigu actually makes sense if you go to this site and check out the last web comic "Wigu" creator Jeff Rowland uploaded. That was titled "When I Grow Up," or W.I.G.U.

Another part of the wonderful world of Wigu is the Dumbrella message boards. See, it's like umbrella, except Dumbrella. It's punny.

The Dumbrella message board is where all the "Wigu" fans hang and give mad props to "Wigu" and various other webcomicals.

While not busy shelving books for you at our local library, Mary Washington freshman Craig Graziano likes to read the Dumbrella board because he says the messages there are sometimes funnier than the actual "Wigu" comic strips.

That's like Fabio-being-hit-in-the-face-by-a-goose funny.

"Wigu" gets updated every day of the week, Monday thru Friday, so make sure you check it out. Jeff is really good about making sure he gets the site updated, and if he can't manage a new comic, there will be something in its place, such as a sketchbook.

So go there!

Web site of the week: I failed to mention the URL for Dumbrella earlier: It's dumbrella.com.
