James Scott "Jim" Dean, 76, of Elkton died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Dean was born March 2, 1927, and was a son of the late Walter Donald and Mary Yancey Crawford Dean.

He worked for Norfolk and Western Railroad, and DuPont, and retired as a captain with the Department of Corrections after 32 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of American Legion Post 290 in Stafford.

On Jan. 31, 1947, he married Alice Virginia Holloway, who preceded him in death on Sept. 12, 1992.

He is survived by one son, Scott Thornton Dean of Elkton; two daughters, Shirley Roberson of Fredericksburg and Carolyn Adams of Montross; one brother, Walter Harold Dean of Elkton; three sisters, Mary Purdham of Elkton, Katherine Leigh of Troy and Doris Dean of Elkton; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, at Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton, with the Rev. James Kite officiating. Burial will follow in Elk Run Cemetery.
