"Young Black Stallion" Featured on IMAX screen at the Science Museum of Virginia

Date published: 12/25/2003

Filmed on the desert of Namibia in Africa, the film "Young Black Stallion" surrounds its audience with breathtaking scenery as the adventure and drama of the story of a young girl and her horse unfolds on the four-story IMAX screen of the Science Museum of Virginia.

As the movie opens, World War II has just ended and 12-year-old Neera is returning with a group to her grandfather's casbah when sinister figures begin to lurk in the background. As the caravan comes under attack, Neera is sent racing into the desert to keep her from harm. Yet, once in this wilderness, she falls from her camel and is knocked unconscious.

When she awakens, she faces two important tasks for survival. First, she must find water. Second, she must determine where she is and how to return home.

After searching the desert, Neera does find water. As she begins to take a drink, she is startled by a snorting sound and turns to see, for the first time, Shetan--the stallion that will play a role in both saving and changing her life.

After a number of encounters, trust and friendship begin to grow between the girl and the stallion. With this companionship, Neera eventually makes her way back to her grandfather's casbah.

As the girl is embraced and taken inside the home, Shetan races away, but returns to the casbah grounds periodically in the dark of the night. Awakened one night, Neera goes outside to investigate and comes face to face, once again, with her companion from the wilderness.

As the girl and the stallion continue to bond, Neera eventually gains the confidence to attempt to ride the horse. She is inspired to enter with Shetan in a race against adult skilled riders. The decision entails great risk--not only physical danger but also the possibility of losing the stallion that she has grown to love.

If Neera wins the winner-take-all race, she can help her grandfather restore what he had lost throughout the years of war. If she loses, she may never see Shetan again.
