Father, daughter bond when she joins Junior Redskins Cheerleaders
By ROB HEDELT THOUGH MANY a Washing- ton Redskins fan would like to erase the team's dismal 5-11 performance this season, there's a father and daughter in the town of Orange who wouldn't trade it for anything. They're 12-year-old Tori Harrison and her father, Jay, who have had a unique father-daughter football adventure this year in the Washington Redskins' organization. Tori, who's been dancing in classes from ballet to hip-hop since she was 6, became a member of the Junior Redskins Cheerleaders this year, performing at halftime shows throughout the season. Jay, raised in Fredericksburg to be a faithful Redskins fan, was there in the stands, cheering on his team and Tori with equal zeal, thrilled to have a reason to share Sunday adventures and season tickets at FedEx Field with his daughter. Last summer, when football wasn't even on the radar of many area residents, Tori and her family--father Jay and mother Lee Langston-Harrison--were getting ready for the season. Alerted to the junior cheering squad by a relative with season tickets, the Harrisons posed the possibility to Tori and signed her up when the answer was yes. More than 100 girls take part on three different junior squads. From the ages of 6 through 17, the girls pay for the privilege of performing at halftime shows and special events in and around Washington. They're supervised by a special cheerleading staff, and they got their uniforms and training at sessions in the summer. "We practice in a space down in the stadium next to the boiler room," said Tori, a confident young lass who said that doing a dance routine before 80,000 didn't make her nervous. "It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter." Her first performance was during halftime of the Washington Redskins-Baltimore Ravens preseason game. The show featured Redskins cheerleading alumni dating back to 1962, the year the Redskinettes (now the Redskins Cheerleaders) were created. It was a good night all around, with the Redskins thumping the Ravens 24-3 and the Harrisons having a blast on the field and in the stands.
