Adella P. Hiers

Adella P. Hiers, 83, entered eternal rest on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003.

She was born and raised in Wheeling, W.Va., and graduated summa cum laude from the College of Mount Saint Joseph on the Ohio, in 1943. She received her Bachelor of Science in nursing, and taught nursing in Ann Arbor, Mich., during the World War II years. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. An avid reader and Civil War fan, she volunteered at the Fredericksburg Museum and Cultural Center for the past 13 years until her death.

She was the widow of Louis H. Hiers Jr. She was a loving mother to her son, Chris Hiers, of Mechanicsville, and two daughters, Sharon Hiers Crossley of Charleston, S.C., and Stephanie "Pepe" Hiers Grass of Richmond; and grandmother to Jessica Hiers, Stephanie Jellison, Craig Crossley and Christina Crossley.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at St. Mary Catholic Church. Inurnment will be private. Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel, will be handling the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Fredericksburg Museum and Cultural Center, 907 Princess Anne St., Fredericksburg, Va. 22401.

"The moving finger writes; and, having writ, moves on: nor all thy piety nor wit shall lure it back to cancel half a line, nor all thy tears wash out of word of it."
