Former teacher gains another felony on his record Date published: 2/7/2004 By KEITH EPPS
A disgraced former teacher had another felony conviction added to his record yesterday but will serve no additional prison time. Kenneth A. Kockler, 27, who last month was ordered to serve 10 years in prison for having sexual relations with a 12-year-old girl in Stafford County, pleaded guilty yesterday in Spotsylvania Circuit Court to taking indecent liberties with the same child. Kockler was sentenced to five years in prison, but that sentence will run concurrently with the one he is already serving for the Stafford convictions. Prosecutor Stuart Sullivan said he worked out the deal after discussing it with Stafford prosecutors. Kockler was a physical education teacher at Ni River Middle School in Spotsylvania when he was arrested in March 2002 for having sex in Fredericksburg with a 15-year-old girl he met on the Internet. He was on probation for that when he began talking to the 12-year-old. According to court records, Kockler was living in Stafford and on probation in the summer of 2002 when he met some of the girl's friends in an Internet chat room. One of the friends gave the girl Kockler's telephone number, and the girl called Kockler, court records state. According to the child's mother, the girl thought he was under 18. Kockler and the child later had numerous telephone conversations, according to court records, and many of the discussions were sexual in nature. The girl's parents were unaware of the relationship until October 31, 2002, when Kockler called the girl's home, court records state. Her mother intercepted the call and told Kockler not to call again. The girl's father found out where Kockler worked and called him on his job, records state, and Kockler apologized, promising to never call the child again. However, an investigation revealed that by then Kockler had had sex with the child at least twice--once at his Stafford home and once in a Stafford motel. Kockler was convicted in Stafford of rape, two counts of aggravated sexual battery and two counts of taking indecent liberties with a child. He was sentenced to a total of 80 years in prison with all but 10 years suspended. To reach KEITH EPPS: 540/374-5404 kepps@freelancestar.com
