Hugh Mercer Elementary
Hugh Mercer students are participating in the Reading Counts computer-based reading motivation program. The program offers opportunities for students to set realistic and attainable goals for reading. The program continually provides feedback and then students earn points for each book that they read. Students can check their progress daily and both parents and teachers can identify areas that need improvement. For more information on the program, visit the Scholastic Web page at src.scholastic.com/ecatalog/read ingcounts.
Tuesday will be the National Read Across America Day. Started in 1998, Read Across America has become the nation's largest reading event that culminates each year around the birthday of the famous children's author, Dr. Seuss. The Fredericksburg Central Rappahannock Regional Library will also conduct story times throughout the week. For more information, log on to nea.org/readacross/contacts/index.html.
In celebration of Black History month, teachers encourage parents to check out titles from the NEA's Top 100 African-American Books List. The list can be accessed at nea.org/readacross/resources/afambooks.html. We also encourage parents to discuss Donna Washington, the Black History Month storyteller who will visit the school tomorrow.
