Vincent J. Gibbons

Vincent J. Gibbons, 58, of Lake of the Woods at Locust Grove died Monday, Feb. 23, 2004, at his residence.

Born Jan. 28, 1946, in Mitcham, England, Mr. Gibbons graduated from Christian Brothers College in Memphis, Tenn., in 1969. He received a master's degree from Memphis State University in 1975 and studied at Howard University in Washington, D.C., and the University of Maryland, College Park, Md.

He began his corrections career in Memphis, Tenn., first as a parole officer at Fort Pillow State Farm Penitentiary and then as a probation officer for Shelby County, Tenn. Starting in 1976, he held various positions at Lorton Reformatory and as warden of the Lorton Central Facility before retiring in 1996.

After retiring from the D.C. Department of Corrections with more than 20 years' service, he was a consultant for the Correction Corporation of America.

After relocating to Lake of the Woods, he served as a special education teacher for Courtland and Spotsylvania high schools. An avid motorcyclist and longtime member of BMW Motorcycle Owners of America, he traveled over 150,000 miles in the United States and Canada on his 1974 BMW R75/6.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Addie Caroline Gibbons.

Survivors include two sons, Andrew L. Gibbons of Garner, N.C., and Jacob V. Gibbons of Locust Grove; a daughter, Aimee Gibbons Zanovello of Washington, D.C.; a brother, Paul Edgar Gibbons of Herndon; a sister, Catherine Anne Gibbons of Annapolis, Md.; and his grandchildren, Hunter Ryan Gibbons and Connor Joseph Gibbons.

A celebration of life service will be held at The Lake of the Woods Church, Locust Grove, at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 27, with a reception to follow in the church fellowship hall. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kidney Cancer Association, 1234 Sherman Ave., Suite 203, Evanston, Ill. 60202.

Johnson Funeral Home, Locust Grove, is handling the arrangements.
