University name logo is in works

Anyone interested in snagging a University of Mary Washington sweatshirt is going to have to wait a few months.

Gov. Mark Warner signed the name into state law Tuesday, but it won't take effect until July 1--and Mary Washington College officials say a true launch of university products won't take place until late summer.

The public will start to notice rollout of the university name when classes resume in the fall, said Margaret Mock, spokeswoman for the college.

Marketing firm Barton, Matheson Willse & Worthington has been hired to study and develop a graphic identity for the University of Mary Washington.

The firm, based in Baltimore, spent two days on campus, speaking with students, alumni, faculty and staff as it crafts new logos and designs.

BMW&W also rounded up every college brochure, pamphlet and publication on campus.

Martin Wilder, vice president of enrollment at MWC, said the firm will help the soon-to-be university coordinate its message for all official publications.

"They will use that information to develop a core message that best portrays the university," Wilder said. "Then they will develop some new graphic identity, or a new logo or logotype that will represent the institution in its new role."

BMW&W has developed graphics and logos for many state schools, as well as Harvard, Duke and Yale.

Admission materials are a priority, since applications will be mailed to prospective students in late August.

"For admissions, that's where we have the biggest stake," he said. "We hope to have new admission materials for recruitment in the fall."

Bookstore items, such as T-shirts, pens, notebooks and stickers, will probably be emblazoned with the new university logo once it's created, Wilder said.

A presentation of the graphic designs will be presented to MWC President William Anderson and the college board of visitors before July 1.
