Eagles roll to two CAC tennis titles

All 13 Mary Washington College tennis players achieved all-conference honors as the Eagles swept both the women's and men's tennis crowns as the Capital Athletic Conference tournament that concluded yesterday at Salisbury, Md.

MWC won four of six women's singles flights and two of three doubles flights to edge runner-up Salisbury, 48-42.

The Eagles swept all six singles and three doubles matches to easily out-distanced second-place Salisbury 54-32.5 on the men's side. The winner and runner-up in each flight earns all-conference honors.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

Britt Gottlieb had four goals and an assist yesterday to lead the Mary Washington College women's lacrosse team to a 15-1 romp over visiting Marymount University in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament.

Jamie Rostan added three goals, while Emily Nagel and Jackie Rose each had two for the Eagles (9-6). Stephanie Hearn, Karen Pickering, Liz Russell, and Callie Talbot also scored, and Robyn Lankford stopped 10 shots, allowing only Susan Decker's goal with 1:38 remaining.

MWC visits Salisbury tomorrow in the semifinals. The Eagles lost 18-4 to the Seagulls on April 6 in Fredericksburg.

SOFTBALL

Kareem Falcon and Lacey Lister led Salisbury to the CAC title with back-to-back victories over visiting MWC over the weekend.

The Sea Gulls (29-5) won yesterday's title game 6-0 as Lister blanked the Eagles on four hits while striking out 11.

Falcon supplied the offense, going three-for-three with two runs scored and two RBIs. The previous day, the junior outfielder went three-for-five with a homer and double as Salisbury topped MWC, 4-0.

The Eagles' Abbey Wineland went 1-1 on the mound for the day, blanking York College 1-0 in eight innings in the loser's bracket final, then pitching the first two innings of the final, allowing one run on four hits.

Kelly Keenan collected a pair of his against York and drove in the game's only run. MWC finishes the season 18-19.
