Authorities say a teacher at Armstrong Elementary School in Reston was hospitalized late Friday with the illness, which affects the fluid that surrounds the brain and the spinal cord.
That word comes after two 16-year-old students at Chantilly High School were infected last week. One of the students has died and the other is recovering at Inova Fairfax Hospital.
Authorities say they have no reason to believe that the Reston case is connected to those in Chantilly. They say the infected teacher doesn't know the students from Chantilly and has had no known contact with them.
Health officials say a few cases of the illness in a relatively small geographic area isn't unusual.
