Supervisors say a toll increase will discourage ridership. Date published: 6/23/2004 (Dulles-AP) -- It might soon cost you more to pay for tolls on the Dulles Greenway. An examiner for the State Corporation Commission has recommended that owners of the highway between Dulles Airport and Leesburg be allowed to raise car tolls to a maximum of three dollars, phased in over three years. The recommendation will be forwarded to commissioners, who have the final say. The current maximum charge for cars traveling on the 14-mile highway is one dollar and 90 cents. Tolls on the Dulles Greenway have been raised three times since 1997. The project chief says the toll road hasn't been profitable since opening in 1995 -- and the owners have yet to recover all of the money invested in the project. Loudoun County supervisors have said a toll increase will discourage ridership.
