The Reverend Clarence Brown, of Charlottesville, has been unanimously endorsed by the Virginia Conference. Date published: 7/12/2004 (Richmond-AP) -- A new bishop will be elected this month to lead Virginia's more than 340,000 United Methodists. Bishop Joe Pennel Junior will leave his post on September first to join the faculty at the Vanderbilt Divinity School. Pennel has served as episcopal leader for Virginia's 1,211 United Methodist churches since 1996. A gathering of religious delegates will select Virginia's new bishop at the United Methodists' Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference July 14th through the 17th at Lake Junaluska, North Carolina. The Reverend Clarence Brown, of Charlottesville, has been unanimously endorsed by the Virginia Conference. Nearly 500 representatives will attend the conference, where five other bishops will also be selected.
